Harvesting the Lessons of Hard Seasons

Autumn has a particular rhythm.

The air changes. The colours deepen. The pace of life softens just a little.

Across New Zealand, April is also a time of harvest. Vineyards gather the grapes that have grown quietly through months of sun, wind, and weather. What began as something small is finally ready to be collected.

Harvest season always reminds me of something important about life:

Growth is rarely immediate.

And the most meaningful lessons often come from the hardest seasons.

When we’re in the middle of a difficult chapter, it can feel as though nothing good is coming from it. We’re focused on getting through the day, managing the uncertainty, and trying to find our footing again.

But time has a way of revealing something we can’t always see while we’re in the middle of the storm.

Experience.

Perspective.

Compassion.

Strength we didn’t know we had.

After the accident that changed my life, there was a long period where everything felt uncertain. Recovery was slow. The future I had imagined no longer looked the same.

At the time, it felt like a loss.

Only later did I begin to recognise what that season had also grown in me.

Patience.

Empathy for others navigating their own challenges.

A deeper understanding that every person carries a story we may not see at first glance.

Those lessons didn’t arrive overnight.

They grew slowly, quietly, in the background of everyday life.

Much like a vineyard waiting for the right moment to harvest.

The truth is, most of us experience seasons that test us.

Seasons of change.

Seasons of rebuilding.

Seasons where the path forward isn’t yet clear.

But those seasons are not empty.

They are growing something.

They are shaping the person we are becoming.

And eventually, if we allow ourselves the time to look back with reflection, we often realize that even the hardest chapters have contributed something meaningful to our lives.

Strength.

Understanding.

A story that may one day help someone else feel less alone.

That is the quiet beauty of harvest.

It reminds us that growth often happens beneath the surface long before we recognise it.

And sometimes the most valuable parts of our story are the lessons gathered from the seasons we once wished away.

Cheers,

Heather
